How to choose the right colour when you have natural red hair
Are you naturally red-haired? You’re part of the rare 1 to 2% of the population with this vibrant and unique shade. Red hair is most common in people from Northern and Western Europe and comes in many shades: deep auburn, bright copper, or lighter golden reds.
I know how special red hair is. It’s naturally shiny, rich and full of personality. That’s why I often advise keeping your base and simply enhancing it. But if you want a change, here’s how to make it work beautifully.
Hair dyes to consider when you have natural red hair
6 Dark blonde – 6.43 Dark blonde copper gold – 7 Blonde – 7.43 Coppery golden blonde – 8 Light blonde – 8.43 Light blonde copper gold – 9 Very light blonde – 9.43 Venetian blonde – 10 Platinum blonde
In colour charts, red isn’t a base tone in itself. Instead, it’s represented through blonde bases with copper or gold tones. For example:
- Dark auburn is listed as 6.43 (dark blonde copper gold)
- Bright copper is listed as 7.43 (medium blonde copper gold)
- Light copper red is listed as 8.43 (light blonde copper gold)
- Venetian blonde is a very rare natural tone: 9.43
I recommend choosing a tone level that matches your natural base (the first number in your dye code). If you’re a natural 6.43, stay within tone level 6. The following numbers reflect undertones – I’ll help you choose these based on your eye colour.
If you want something more subtle or less attention-grabbing, you could try:
- A tone one level above your natural colour without undertones
- A tone one level below your natural colour without undertones
Don’t worry – even without added tones, your natural red undertones will still shine through, giving you a soft, radiant colour.

When you have red hair, the first step is to understand your natural base tone. This corresponds to the first digit in your hair dye code. Then, choose the reflections (second and third digits) based on your skin and eye colour.
